Azerbaijan: A Model of Tolerance in an Intolerant Region

Azerbaijan has declared this year its Year of Multiculturalism, a celebration of the ethnic and religious tolerance for which it is so famous — and which is so very unusual in that corner of the world. Azerbaijan has a long history of moderation and tolerance — the first secular¬†democracy in the Islamic world, it recognized women’s right to vote nearly one hundred years ago and is home to a bustling array of Muslims, Christians, and Jews.¬†

In that spirit, Azerbaijan hosted a trip by a Jewish youth group from Atlanta, Georgia. This is the story of one more link between the West and Azerbaijan — and how Azerbaijan is increasingly showing it is part of the West.
