Closer European Integration for Ukraine: A Summit on the Benefits and Challenges

As the signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union approaches, the practical benefits and challenges of closer European integration become more apparent. At a recent summit in Brussels, European dignitaries and members of the Ukrainian Parliament from both sides of the aisle met to discuss economic growth, civil society, European legal and social norms, and as always, the Yulia Tymoshenko case.

The benefits, the participants noted, are obvious: economic growth, broader public trust in institutions, and bringing Ukraine more firmly into Europe’s orbit, and away from Russia’s. In that light, the challenges are entirely manageable.
